While the Mediterranean diet is a plant-based or plant-based diet, there are no big restrictive rules, deprivation or calorie counting like other diets. Eating the Mediterranean way is about satiety, inclusion and enjoying your favorite treats in moderation!

It’s not a “diet” in the restrictive sense, but a well-balanced eating pattern that you can adapt and use every day to make healthier choices that honor your body.

Here’s a quick primer on what you should be consuming when following the Mediterranean diet:

Meal planning starts with the pantry. You’ll find that the Mediterranean way of eating uses simple ingredients that are available in most grocery stores (and you may already have some on hand). I have a complete Mediterranean diet shopping list for you. But in addition to stocking your fridge with greens and leafy greens and your freezer with good wild fish and other seafood, here’s a short list of pantry staples I keep on hand and use often in Mediterranean cooking:

One of the problems with standard meal calendars and weekly meal plans is that they don’t offer any flexibility. Many meal plans require you to cook something new every day of the week. They are a staggering amount of food preparation! Many also don’t take into account your schedule: what if I have a weekly meeting on Monday night where I eat dinner? Or am I going out with friends this Friday night?

This diet may not work for you – and that’s okay! This meal plan may give you too much flexibility. Maybe not
