Academy Healthcare – SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE )–Howard Healthcare Academy, the only school in San Diego dedicated exclusively to dental programs and founded by the creators of The Super Dentists, recently received accreditation from the Council on Occupational Commission Education (COE).
The campaign was announced by Dr. Lois Gackenheimer, Chair of the Commission, following the June Commission meeting of the Council for Vocational Education and Training on June 10, 2021. The award of accreditation status is based on an assessment to demonstrate that the institution not only meets the Commission’s quality standards, but also the Student, community and employer needs. The Commission’s assessment process involves extensive self-study by the institution and intensive review by a visiting team of professional educators representing Commission member institutions from other states.

Howard Healthcare Academy began self-study in November 2019 and underwent a team visit in February 2021. The visiting team chair was Steve Sullivan. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, the Council on Occupational Education provides quality assurance services to post-secondary technical education providers across the country.

“We are delighted that Howard Healthcare Academy has received accreditation from the COE. We have already begun the application process to receive federal and state funding, which in turn will help more students fund their careers in dental assistants,” said Kami Hoss, DDS, MS, co-founder of Howard Healthcare Academy and The Super Dentists , the largest pediatric dental practice in San Diego. “Assistant dentistry is both a hot topic right now and an industry that’s forecast to grow double digits in California over the next five years.”
According to the Bureau of Labor, dental assistantship is expected to grow 11% between 2018 and 2028, which is a higher rate than many other industries.
Organized as a non-profit corporation, the Council’s mission is to ensure quality and integrity in professional and technical education. Services offered include institutional accreditation (recognized by the US Department of Education), program quality reviews for government and technical education providers, and information services. Most of the Council’s work is carried out by qualified, professional volunteers who are experts in technical education. Institutional membership of the Council is voluntary but can only be achieved through accreditation.
The Council’s current membership makes it unique. Members include post-secondary public technical institutes, specialty military and national defense schools, job corps centers, private career schools, nonprofit technical education providers, business and industrial education units, and federal agencies. No other agency accredits and serves the diversity of organizations that the Council serves. There are currently over 500 institutional members.
