The most important part of living with UC is managing and relieving the symptoms of flare-ups and reducing their duration. The flare-up is generally followed by the period of remission, during which the symptoms do not interfere with daily life.

The specific causes of the UC flare-up are still unknown. For some people, the effects may only be visible in a small section, but for a few, it may spread throughout the entire colon. However, certain factors that can trigger flare-ups are:

Outbreaks occur suddenly and are very often acute. For some, it lasts from days to weeks. Between flare-ups, one can experience a period of remission, which can also last from days to weeks.

Symptoms of the flare-up vary depending on the severity and location of the inflammation. The most common flare-up symptoms include:

Tips To Prevent An Ulcerative Colitis Flare

Ulcerative colitis flare is the return of symptoms after the remission period. It involves diarrhoea, abdominal pain, cramps, rectal pain, bleeding, fatigue and urgency to defecate. Although flare-ups may feel helpless, a few dietary and lifestyle changes can help control symptoms and relieve flare-up pain.

There is more and more evidence that food plays a major role in ulcerative colitis. Dairy products are one of the possible culprits. Avoiding dairy products can help reduce diarrhea, symptoms of abdominal pain and gas.

Fiber-rich food is a must for a balanced diet. In fact, fiber-rich foods aid bowel movement and add bulk to the stool, making it easier to pass. Try adding healthy sources of fiber to your food such as cooked leafy vegetables and fruits. However, it is advisable to also avoid nuts, seeds and corn.

Best Foods To Eat During Ulcerative Colitis Flare Up

If you have ulcerative colitis, you may already know which foods make your flare-ups worse. But it’s just as important to figure out what to include in your diet because the right foods will provide you with important nutrients without exacerbating your symptoms.

Diet & Lifestyle Changes For Inflammatory Bowel Disease (ibd)

Most experts recommend that you limit your fiber intake when you have a flare-up of ulcerative colitis. A general rule is to replace high-fiber foods,  such as  nuts, seeds, and raw fruits and vegetables,  with more easily digestible foods. Here are eight foods to eat during ulcerative colitis and the reasons why they can help.

1. Applesauce: Since your gastrointestinal system experiences a lot of irritation during a flare-up, you may want to stick to soft, easy-to-digest foods like applesauce. Be sure to choose an unsweetened variety, though, because added sugar can cause more inflammation. You can also make your own sugar-free applesauce by boiling sliced peeled apples with a little water and then pureeing the mixture.

2. Ripe Bananas and Canned Fruit: Although dietitians generally recommend avoiding raw fruit during a flare, very ripe, soft bananas are often well tolerated. Bananas are also a good source of carbohydrates, which together with protein and fat provide energy. Also, soft fruits like canned pears or peaches may not be irritating, says Shannon Szeles, RDN, of York, Pennsylvania.

3. Cooked vegetables: Soft, cooked vegetables like carrots and spinach can provide important nutrients, such as vitamins A and K. Just make sure the vegetables are thoroughly cooked — until they can be mashed with a fork, Szeles says — so that any potentially irritating fiber is broken down .

4. Probiotics: If you are not lactose intolerant, yogurt can give you some protein and probiotics, which are live bacteria that can help the digestive system. Make sure you buy yogurt that says live and active cultures on the label, says Szeles. Avoid yogurts that contain large chunks of fruit, which can be difficult to digest. “It’s fine if the yogurt has fruit that is soft, pitted and mixed in,” Szeles adds. Probiotic supplements are also an option if you are lactose intolerant.

5. Salmon: People with ulcerative colitis and are lactose intolerant or simply want to get more protein into your diet, add salmon to the foods you eat during a flare-up. In addition to being a good source of protein, salmon has healthy omega-3 fatty acids that can help reduce inflammation. If you don’t like salmon, you can eat tuna, shrimp or other fish that have a high content of omega-3 fatty acids.

Neilanjan Nandi, MD, a gastroenterologist and assistant professor at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, recommends baking, broiling, or sautéing salmon instead of frying it. “Frying fish causes it to lose a lot of its nutritional value,” he says.

6. Nut Butter: Peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter and other nut butters are another source of protein and healthy fats. Choose creamy peanut butter instead of chunky to avoid having to digest hard nut pieces, which can cause additional irritation during a flare-up. Try eating peanut butter with bread, advises Dr. Nandi, or wrap it in a tortilla. Another good choice is nut butter on a low-fiber cracker like a saltine.
