Speaking of dark meat, we alternately feed the thighs and breasts. While we will remove the skin from poultry and trim the excess fat from red meat, we don’t worry about buying lean meat for our dogs.
A little fat is essential to a good diet. (If your dog is prone to being overweight, you may want to stick to lean meats only.)
Raw vegetables come from whatever is currently grown in our garden. Sometimes we throw a few pieces of fruit in there, like in the fall when cranberries are in season. (The bugs have a history of urinary tract infections, so we usually give them a cranberry supplement as a preventative measure).
We vary the vegetables each week so our pugs don’t eat too much of any one thing. In one meal, they may get broccoli, celery, bean leaves, radishes, and nasturtium. Sometimes apples, bananas or feijoa that we cut from our trees … and even herbs, such as salad dressing, basil or parsley.
