The Blood Type Diet originated from the 1996 book Eat Right 4 Your Type, written by naturopathic Dr. Peter D’Adamo, and has been walking around in various health forums for almost three decades.

Part of what they say rests on the idea that blood types serve as maps of our ancestral history and genetics, and that the foods our ancestors typically ate are suitable for our bodies, even in the present day.

Below is a snapshot of the four blood types and what D’Adamo posits is the best type of diet for each.

Type A: Farmer or farmer. According to D’Adamo, those with type A blood should avoid meat — especially red — and eat a plant-based diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Because of their “sensitive immune system,” they should also avoid processed foods and choose organic foods whenever possible.

Type B: People with type B blood are called “nomads” by D’Adamo. People with type B are encouraged to eat plants but also a lot of meat (except chicken). This diet also warns against eating corn, wheat, tomatoes, nuts and other seeds.

Type AB: People with blood type AB, or “enigmas” as D’Adamo calls them, are a mixture between types A and B. Blood Medicine encourages these people to eat seafood, tofu, milk, beans, vegetables and grains but avoid corn, beef and chicken. D’Adamo argues that type AB also has low levels of stomach acid and therefore should avoid caffeine and alcohol.

Type O: Also known as “the hunter,” D’Adamo says that people with this blood type should eat a high-protein diet rich in red meat, fish, chicken and other fruits and vegetables. This leads to a paleo diet that warns type Os from eating grains, legumes and dairy products.

So far, there is little evidence that following blood-based diet recommendations improves health. “The blood type diet has been reduced many times by new and improved research,” Rios says. “People who say they start feeling better on this diet usually do this because they start cooking at home more and eating more and less processed food can improve a person’s health.”
