If you are a transitioning service member applying for VA disability compensation under the Benefit Delivery at Discharge (BDD) or Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES) program, there are some changes coming that you should know about.
Beginning April 1, you must complete and submit a new Separation Health Assessment (SHA) Part A Self-Assessment with your BDD or IDES application.

The SHA is a single separation test that supports both the VA disability compensation process and the Department of Defense (DoD) separation/retirement process.
The SHA exam documents any medical concerns identified during your military career, helping to identify future illnesses and reducing unnecessary tests between both organizations.
The SHA Part A questionnaire will provide VA examiners with a history of the service member’s medical condition and help conduct a more thorough and better quality examination. A link to the Part A questionnaire will be placed on the VA Form 21-526-EZ application for disability compensation and related compensation benefits under the eligibility criteria for the BDD program and on the VA BDD and IDES fact sheets. BDD claimants who submit online application form can upload complete Part A along with their STR under Evidence section. After the VA has completed and reviewed the application, STR, and Part A self-assessment, a SHA exam will be requested. The SHA clinical evaluation will be conducted by one of VA’s contracted examiners or a local VA health care examiner. All evidence submitted by the service member shall be made available to the examiner electronically.

Beginning Jan. 17, veterans in acute suicidal crisis will be able to visit any VA or non-VA health care facility for free emergency health care — including up to 30 days of inpatient or crisis residential care and up to 30 days of outpatient care. 90 days.
