Family Healthcare Associates – A group of four physicians and several advanced practice physicians with Family Medicine Associates of Augusta received their white coats Monday as they officially joined the staff of AU Medical Associates, the Medical College of Georgia Faculty Practice Plan. Additionally, Augusta University officials unveiled signage at the Summerville FMAA training ground at 1417 Pendleton Road, which will become the AU Health Family Medicine Associates Care Center starting April 1 after 25 years of service.
“We are thrilled to join the Augusta University family,” said Dr. Anthony V. (Tony) Smith, who has practiced at Family Medicine Associates of Augusta since 1992. “We all have some type of alumni association with MCG and he has taught students for over 20 years, so to make it formal is amazing. This transition is basically like coming home.”

Smith said the FMAA practice will become a model for continuing this kind of collaboration in primary care across the region.

“Medically, professionally and socially, AU has done it without a hitch,” said FMAA site coordinator and associate professor of clinical practice Dr. Andrew Van Alstine. “All we ever knew was private practice, so we were worried. You put us at ease from the first meeting. The whole process went smoothly.”
“We are pleased to have the FMAA team join AU Medical Associates and unveil one of several new community care centers,” said Dr. Julian Nussbaum, executive vice president for clinical affairs at Augusta University and CEO of AU Medical Associates. “This new Family Medicine Associates Care Center provides hundreds of primary care patients with direct access to specialty and subspecialty care, state-of-the-art treatments, and clinical trials and research offered only by Augusta’s only academic medical center.”
More importantly, this transition helps AU Health create more primary care options for patients in areas of the community where and when they need it most.
“The future of medicine is where our patients are,” Nussbaum said, “whether it’s around the coffee table with a personal device, around the corner in the urgent care office or more comprehensive care at the AU Medical Center.”

Augusta University Health System is investing in physician practices, urgent care and ambulatory facilities as part of an overarching plan to expand ambulatory care.

Our first client…and current client is Dr. Charlie Powell, founder and executive vice president of clinical operations for Healthcare Associates of Texas. Amanda first met Dr. Powell when he and his better half Keila were still in Florida. Amanda worked at Medical City Las Colinas and was in the Navy. She recruited him to Texas and Healthcare Associates of Texas. While expanding their private practice in Irving, they worked together on a corporate wellness campaign where Dr. Powell has conducted health interviews at many large corporations in Las Colinas.
Around the same time that the Brummitt Group was formed, Healthcare Associates was recruiting a new specialist to its practice. It was in the winter of 2008. Dr. Powell hired The Brummitt Group to create a strategic marketing plan for the doctor and present it to the local community.
Here’s what Dr. Powell, when asked how he enjoyed working with The Brummitt Group after this project: “Amanda with The Brummitt Group has been the real reason for all my success here. She helped recruit me to this field and to a great practice. This gave me the opportunity to thrive and build an amazing and very busy organization. I now own a multi-specialty practice, imaging center, sleep lab, pharmacy, and other businesses that she has helped me build through many other forms of advertising and promotion of me and my businesses. Now that I own a practice and businesses, she was always there when I needed her. She was even willing to step in as my executive director during difficult times of transition. Her current projects with me include promoting my new doctor and starting his practice from the ground up. Her numerous and invaluable contacts she made in this area proved to be an incredible asset. Since then we have helped Dr. Powell and his team with everything from MetaRevive’s packaging design, to potential mystery shopping acquisitions, organizing open houses, mystery shopping and improving processes in their call center and pharmacy, to developing their website, to managing social media, to helping with by selling all the great practices he develops. Yes, it is evolving. He’s the guy! He has developed hair restoration procedures, allergy protocols and ways to reduce/eliminate snoring. He is constantly looking for ways to improve the lives of his patients.
We can’t talk about Dr. Powell without telling you about Courtney! Courtney LeClaire is the Practice Manager of the Cosmetic & Wellness Division of Healthcare Associates and has been with us since MetaRevive. We just adore her! She is the glue that holds everything together on the aesthetic side of the practice…and holds Dr. Powell in the role. 🙂 We asked Courtney what she likes about working with us, and here’s what she said: “Collaborating on ideas, working as a team knowing that you all care about the end result as well.”
