Every person is different and no diet is right for everyone. Finding a diet that works for you can be trial and error, and each flare may require changes to your diet. The foods and drinks below have been compiled from several inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients in order to work for them. Many of these patients regularly follow the SCD or AIP diet to reduce their inflammation levels, avoid flare-ups, and heal. The beautiful thing about these diets is that once you start to recover, you should be able to tolerate more foods than before. I hope this helps, and this list of foods and recipes will be constantly growing, so check back often for more belly-filling food inspiration!

Many people have a hard time tolerating fruits and vegetables during flare-ups, so be sure to avoid all raw vegetables. Instead, peel your fruits and skins and cook your vegetables thoroughly. Red, fatty cuts of meat can be uncomfortable, but ground turkey, tender chicken, and fish are easy to digest. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD is a term used to cover inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. UC causes inflammation of the colon, which can affect the rectum, part of the colon, or the entire colon. This diet sheet may help you if you have UC.

Diet is not the cause of UC; However, diet can help relieve symptoms such as diarrhea during flare-ups; Maintain good health, including healthy bones. You may start to notice that certain foods make your UC symptoms worse over time, so it’s best to avoid them. However, don’t cut out entire food groups because you’ll miss out on some important nutrients. The main food groups are displayed below in the ‘Eatwell Guide’.

Soluble Fiber – Dietary fiber can be divided into two forms, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber is partially digested (broken down) in the colon to form a glue-like substance that helps produce soft/formed stools without causing inflammation. Examples of foods rich in soluble fiber include:

Insoluble Fiber – This type of fiber is not well tolerated as it speeds up bowel movements and further irritates the colon as it travels through the intestines. Examples of foods high in insoluble fiber include:

Some people find that they can’t tolerate lactose, which is found in dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt, especially during flare-ups. If you decide to avoid lactose, it is important to continue to include sources of calcium in your diet to maintain bone health. Examples of lactose-free alternatives that contain calcium include:

Spicy foods and fatty foods can irritate the colon and possibly cause loose stools. In order to maintain a healthy balanced diet, it is important to reintroduce any avoided foods once your flare-up is over.

Probiotics are ‘friendly’ gut bacteria available in capsule, liquid (usually yogurt drinks) and powder forms. They are considered safe to take if you have UC and may have beneficial properties. They are used in the treatment of pouchitis, but research into their use in UC is ongoing.

Breakfast Ideas For People With Ulcerative Colitis

Fish oils rich in omega-3 fatty acids have been found to have anti-inflammatory effects. However, there is currently no clear evidence that they are beneficial for UC sufferers. Do I need multivitamin and mineral supplements or supplement drinks? You should get all your vitamins and minerals from a healthy variety of foods. If you can’t tolerate insoluble fiber during flare-ups, and therefore cut back on fruits and vegetables, you may need to take a general multivitamin supplement until you return to your normal diet. You can eat bad food during a UC flare-up. If this continues for more than a week and you lose weight, your doctor or dietitian may recommend a supplement drink to prevent further weight loss.

What To Eat With Ulcerative Colitis

“What we eat doesn’t cause intestinal inflammation in ulcerative colitis, but certain foods can worsen the symptoms of inflammation,” says Tori Armul, M.D., a nutrition consultant in Columbus, Ohio, and former national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition. and dietetics.

While foods that cause irritation vary widely among people with ulcerative colitis, fiber-rich foods can cause discomfort during flare-ups, according to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. If you have a fever, Amul suggests first working with a registered dietitian who will analyze how your diet affects your symptoms and identify foods you cannot tolerate.

“People with ulcerative colitis have different food intolerances, so an elimination diet can help identify problem foods,” she says. “Lactose, high-fat, raw, and high-fiber foods are the most common culprits,” she says. These same foods are easily tolerated during remission.
