I managed to get through college, grad school, and mothering three young children without coffee. I really didn’t like the taste – not in a cup, a cappuccino or even a cup of coffee ice cream. But in the past year I have seduced myself into the worship of coffee.

Wake Me Up Coffee Smoothie With Oats And Banana

At first I drank it in small mugs poured by my husband. Eventually, I started cooking on my own. The next natural step was to combine my newfound appreciation for coffee with my long-standing love of smoothies.

In short, this creamy concoction has the same texture as a frosted mocha shake, just a little on the lighter side because there’s no ice cream involved. It is sweet enough, and thanks to the addition of cocoa powder, it gives a mild coffee flavor with a hint of chocolate.

Coffee: You start with a cup of strong, cold coffee. You can brew and chill it yourself or get a bottle of cold beer from the market.

Milk: If you use cow’s milk, I recommend at least 1% milk fat. If choosing plant-based milk, look for sweetened varieties with a little body, such as oat milk or coconut milk.

Cocoa Powder: You can’t call it mocha without a hint of chocolate. For this recipe comes cocoa powder, which makes the smoothie taste delicious and provides healthy plant flavonoids. If you want to use cocoa powder, the raw version of cocoa powder, go for it. It has a slightly bitter taste, but is rich in antioxidants.

Smoothie Addition: A ripe frozen banana adds sweetness and tanginess to your smoothie. Finally, a spoonful of chia seeds and almond butter boost the protein and healthy fats that give the smoothie staying power (translation: you won’t be hungry 10 minutes after slurping it up).
