According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tooth decay is one of the most common childhood chronic diseases. Stephen Mitchell, DMD, associate professor and pediatric dentist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry, says parents play an important role in protecting children’s smiles. Mitchell recommends building a solid foundation for good dental hygiene by helping children maintain a balanced diet, brushing and flossing daily, and ensuring regular dental checkups.

What Is The Process For Getting Dental Veneers?

“When we sleep, our mouths are dry, which allows bacteria known as plaque to multiply. Before going to bed, we want to remove as much plaque as possible from the teeth,” he said.

“That’s where bacteria like to hide,” Mitchell said. “You’ll often have to pull back your bottom lip to get the toothbrush up to the gums of the bottom teeth.”

Mitchell recommends that parents supervise brushing until a child develops mature hand-eye coordination, which is key to effective brushing.

“Most kids aren’t ready to clean themselves until they’re 6-7 years old,” Mitchell said. “Beforehand, let the child practice brushing his teeth; but then go see them to really brush your teeth.’

Another important practice is flossing, which is recommended at least once a day. “The toothbrush doesn’t get between the teeth, so flossing is the only way to remove bacteria between the teeth,” Mitchell said.

Tooth decay is a chronic disease that occurs over a long period of time, in part due to constant exposure to sugary treats. Therefore, managing the consumption of sugary foods is the key to preventing tooth decay.

“While brushing and flossing will help prevent tooth decay, the best way to prevent tooth decay is to limit the number of sugary foods your child eats each day,” Mitchell said. “People often associate candy with tooth decay; but sugary drinks like juices, sodas and flavored milks seem to cause more cavities in my patients.’

Things To Know About Dental Bridges

“Sweets in moderation are not a bad thing,” Mitchell said. “Glutinous and sour candies that stay in the mouth for a long time tend to be the most dangerous, while chocolate, which melts quickly, damages the teeth the least. But if parents really want to reduce the risk of cavities, cut back on sugary drinks.”

Artificial sweeteners such as sucralose, stevia or aspartame do not cause cavities. Another way to reduce the risk of cavities is to switch from drinks to products sweetened with these types of sweeteners.

Dental trauma is physical damage to the teeth, gums, bone that holds the sockets, or the soft tissue of the mouth, including the lips and tongue.

In sports such as softball or baseball, the risk of dental trauma is high. Mitchell and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend wearing a mouthguard in any sport that allows it. If a permanent tooth ever breaks out, time is of the essence.

“If the tooth can be put back in within 30 minutes, there is a better chance of a good result,” he said. “Immediately placing the tooth in the milk increases the time significantly.”

A career in dentistry is an excellent choice. US News & World Report’s 2021 “100 Best Jobs” ranked dentistry among the top 10 of all career options, and three dental specialties (oral and maxillofacial surgeon, prosthodontist, and orthodontist) were ranked among the top 35.

How To Start A Dental Practice In 2023

In addition to the inherent satisfaction of helping patients improve their oral health, the average salaries for these dental professions are high, ranging from $150,000 to $210,000.

In this guide, we’ll cover how to become a dentist and give you recommendations on how to get started to maximize your chances of pursuing your dream dental career.

Becoming a dentist requires a significant investment in education. The vast majority of dental schools require a bachelor’s degree to apply, with only a few schools offering accelerated admission after just two or three years of undergraduate study. Of the 68 currently accredited dental schools in the United States, all are four-year programs with the exception of the Dugoni University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, a three-year program in San Francisco.

Like medical school admission, dental schools do not require a specific major. However, you will need to meet dental school requirements, which include certain courses (primarily science), Dental Admission Test (DAT) scores, letters of recommendation, a dental school personal statement, and relevant extracurricular information.

After completing dental school, a student will receive either a DDS or a DMD. These degrees are equivalent in all aspects, have the same accrediting body and curriculum requirements.

A quick history lesson explains the difference between the two. The first dental school in the United States was the Baltimore College of Medicine, founded in 1840, which began awarding the DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree. Harvard established a dental school shortly thereafter. Because all their degrees are in Latin, they decided to award the DMD (

Or Doctor of Dentistry). Since then, universities have been selective about which degree they award, with two-thirds currently offering the DDS.

Becoming a dentist is challenging in many ways, including the years of schooling required, the financial costs of education and setting up a dental practice, and the competitive dental school application process.

With the dental school acceptance rate currently hovering around 55 percent nationally—in other words, 45 percent of applicants fail to enroll anywhere each year—you’ll need to demonstrate good academic performance to gain acceptance to dental school. In recent years, the average undergraduate GPA and DAT scores for successful dental school applicants have remained steady at around 3.5 and 20, respectively, with the most prestigious schools boasting much higher numbers.

It generally takes eight years to become a dentist: four years to earn a bachelor’s degree as an undergraduate and four years to earn a DDS or DMD in dental school. If you are interested in specializing, you will also need to complete a dental residency (more on that below).

For high school students who are 100 percent committed to the field, there is another path to dentistry that can shorten the time required. BS/DDS programs, or “direct dental programs,” combine an undergraduate institution and a dental school, allowing students to gain admission to both directly from high school. These programs typically take seven or eight years to complete, although there are a few that can be completed in six or even five years.

Dentistry is a diverse field. Career opportunities in dentistry include academics, private practice, public health, and more. A dentist could work in several different settings during their career – for example, starting in public health, moving into private practice, and ending up in academia.

In addition to becoming a general or family dentist, dentistry also offers a number of specialties. The American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes 12 dental specialties in this field:

If you want to enter the specialty, you will need to complete a residency after dental school. Most residencies range from two to three years, with oral and maxillofacial surgery requiring four to six years. Some programs offer a scholarship and pay students during their training, while others require students to pay tuition and can be very expensive.

If you are a high school student interested in dentistry, there are several things you can do to set yourself up for success.

One of the best things you can do when researching a career is to spend time with people who are already in the field. It is often best to start with your own family dentist. Talk to your friends and family to see if anyone knows a dentist and would be willing to introduce them to you. See if you can shadow a dentist’s office to increase your experience and understanding of dentistry.
