An inguinal hernia (hernia of the groin) can be more than just a pain – they can put you in hospital if they’re ignored for too long. The most common hernia, they occur when organs bulge through a weak spot in the connective tissue that normally protects them and keeps them from moving around.

I do laparoscopic hernia repairs every week. But the good news is that this operation is now considered “day surgery” and most patients can go home to recover in the comfort of their own homes after the procedure.

Tips For Preventing A Hernia

Years ago, any type of hernia repair surgery was performed through “open surgery,” which required a significant incision, hospitalization and a significantly longer recovery period.

But when it is performed using today’s minimally invasive surgical techniques, the patient has only a few small incisions, very little bleeding and much less post-operative pain.

Most men notice a round lump in the groin or scrotum that may come and go. This is why men can ignore it until it grows or affects other organs and becomes a more serious and complex health issue. In my practice, more than 50 percent of the hernia cases I see require immediate surgical intervention because they are symptomatic.

If the hernia is small and asymptomatic, the patient may only need ongoing monitoring. But there is always a chance that it will become a surgical emergency if the hernia interferes with the normal functioning of the body or is incarcerated (treed).

Could That Lump Be A Hernia?

Not all people who develop a hernia will fall into these categories, but they often contribute to the development of the condition:

Remember, women can also experience an inguinal hernia, especially if the abdominal wall is weakened during pregnancy or as a result of any of the other factors listed above.

Once a hernia develops, it will not go away without medical treatment. When left untreated, they often expand over time, putting more pressure on surrounding tissues. If the bowel (bowel loop) twists at a weak point in the abdominal wall, it can block the bowel, leading to severe pain, nausea, vomiting and the inability to go to the bathroom.

An incarcerated hernia (the herniated tissue twists in the hernia sac) can cut off the blood flow to part of the bowel. This condition is called strangulation and could lead to the death of the affected intestine leading to sepsis, a life-threatening inflammation that kills more than 250,000 people every year. A strangulated hernia is life-threatening and requires emergency surgery.

Your personal physician or GI surgeon can usually diagnose a hernia based on a physical exam. Be prepared – a diagnosed hernia that is already swollen or painful usually requires surgery to relieve discomfort and prevent more serious complications.

I always recommend having a surgeon’s name in your health care contact list. Hopefully the need never arises, but if it does, you can make a simple call rather than frantically researching surgeons on your own while feeling stressed.

Make sure the surgeon you choose is board certified; affiliated with at least one high quality hospital or surgeon; have performed the operation you need several times recently with successful results.

Thankfully, we live in an age where state-of-the-art surgical techniques abound and offer less risk to patients, smaller incisions, less post-operative pain and significantly faster recovery.

Swelling After Inguinal Hernia Surgery

A hernia can occur in a number of different parts of the body. They can also cause pain and discomfort. This is because during a hernia, the contents of one part of your body push through into the surrounding tissue or muscle. A hernia can occur in the abdomen, around the belly button (umbilicus), in the groin area (femoral or inguinal) or in the stomach. If you have a stomach (hiatal) hernia, you are likely to experience hyperacidity or acid reflux. Fortunately, you can manage the pain at home and make lifestyle changes to relieve some of the discomfort of a hernia.

To relieve hernia pain, apply ice to the area twice a day to reduce swelling and inflammation. You can use an ice pack or frozen vegetables, make sure you wrap it in a towel and don’t use it for more than 15 minutes, which could damage your skin. If you have an inguinal hernia, ask your doctor about wearing a brace, which is a type of supportive underwear designed to take pressure off your hernia. To reduce reflux caused by a hiatal hernia, eat smaller meals, which will ease the pressure on your stomach. You can also drink herbal teas, such as ginger or fennel to reduce nausea, vomiting, and acid reflux. If you still suffer from hernia pain, take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen. For more tips from our fellow Medical writer, including how to do gentle exercises to take pressure off your hernia, read on. A hernia occurs when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the surrounding muscle or tissue wall.

Will My Hernia Heal On Its Own?

The main cause is muscle weakness. In sailors we see this due to ageing, being overweight, bowel problems such as constipation or most commonly, by lifting things that are too heavy. This causes repeated stress on the muscles which then leads to weakness and possible herniation of the fatty tissue or bowel.
