Once a patient is enrolled, there is usually a “hand off” that takes place. This simply means that the clinical assistant now either goes out to the front waiting area, or the front desk staff escorts the patient to the back area to meet with the clinical staff – who then brings the patient to the dental technician.
What happens next can be different for different projects. A new patient is either seen by a dentist, who will review the Med Hx, take important dental xrays, do a general cleaning.
Some practices have implemented a hygienist-assistant schedule – where the dental assistant often works alongside the hygienist. This means the clinical assistant takes xrays, rotates the chair, sterilizes the cleaning equipment, etc. I have also changed to this style of work since last year.
If there is no hygienist, the doctor sees the patient first, does the exam, prescribes the treatment plan, and provides the hygienist at the end of the appointment.

Which system is best depends on the type of practice you have, the size of your patient base, and your ability to provide enough patients to the hygienists to afford a support-hygiene schedule. This is another matter for another post.
For now let’s assume that you just started, there is no cleaner in the project, so you do your own cleaning.
It always helps to have a plan in place that you usually follow, so you can go through the process to prevent missing important steps.
