My sister and her husband have been on the ProLon fasting-mimicking diet a few times. But it can be expensive and therefore not available to everyone. So I wanted to create a do-it-yourself (sometimes called FMD DIY) meal plan for my mom and me that mimics a 5-day fast, a plan that can be done anywhere in the world. with familiar and affordable ingredients.

Although all the meals on this plan are safe and nutritious, and there is plenty of food to keep you from feeling hungry, always be careful when fasting at home. If you have a medical condition that you are treating or a history of eating disorders, consult your doctor before starting FMD.

This is possibly one of the most restrictive meal plans I’ve done and definitely something completely new for my mom. I mention that my mother is generally healthy, takes no medication, and has not been diagnosed with any disease. He was also under 65 when we did this diet.

Although I had been following a grain-free, sugar-free, and lectin-free diet for a few years, my mother never completely removed any of these food groups from her diet. And on top of that, it was calorie restricted.

We can make this meal without a calorie restriction. Five days of eating clean, real food is good for us no matter what. But if you want to reap the benefits of fasting along with dieting, you need to stay under 900 calories a day.

Fyi, Dr. Valter Longo, who has been researching the benefits of calorie-restricted fasting for decades, has a 600 calorie restriction in his ProLon meal plan. You can do either or somewhere in the middle. Some even claim that we can benefit from it if we consume less than 1100 calories. 800-900 calories sounds like a good number that can be achieved without feeling hungry.

Plants with high levels of harmful lectins are not allowed. We soak beans and legumes and pressure cook them to remove most of the lectins, and eat no more than one cup a day (8 ounces). This is mostly Dr. Gundry’s addition to the FMD plan, and from personal experience, consuming beans and legumes without soaking and pressure cooking does not help digestion.

We can add a small number of berries, but you will probably have to decide depending on your current health status. The original ProLon meal plan includes some nut bars that contain a small amount of honey. So my interpretation is that this plan can include a small amount of sugar from fruit or honey if that suits your needs. Dr. Steven Gundry apparently doesn’t recommend it.

When creating our menu, I applied a nutritional approach. It is a term coined by Dr. Joel Fuhrman to describe a diet that maximizes micronutrients and minimizes macronutrients. This means eating a varied diet that is rich in nutrient-dense whole foods and low in calories. And remember, calorie restriction isn’t about starving yourself of nutrients; on the contrary.

Make sure you have a transition day after five days where you eat a normal calorie diet but keep it 100% plant-based with complex carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes, beans or legumes (pressure-cooked), plenty of healthy fats. and lectin-free grains such as sorghum, millet, fonio or teff.

NOTE. This cleanse can also be considered low histamine. Additionally, many of the foods I use in this cleanse have antihistamine properties. Only one meal out of ten contains a small amount of avocado and the snack has some cocoa, but both can be easily removed/replaced.

To maintain nutritional value, consider sourcing locally and organically in season as much as possible, and include both raw and cooked vegetables. It’s not that you have to make it perfect, just do the best that’s available to you. I wouldn’t go out to get ingredients that grow in the tropics when I’m in Romania and it’s fall.
