Overall, Connecticut ranked #4. States that received an overall score of 1-13 indicate a lower prevalence of mental illness and a higher rate of access to care. The 2021 Mental Health Report rated Connecticut #13. Connecticut remains at #4 overall for adults, slipping to #8 for youth.

“Connecticut has done a good job of regaining our place at the top of the list of states that make mental wellness a priority, but in terms of access to insurance and treatment, our state was ranked 9th.” It’s important to remember that Connecticut has one of the highest levels of income inequality in the entire country. To ensure we continue to invest in our mental well-being, we can’t take our foot off the accelerator. We must increase our support for prevention and intervention efforts and continue to make mental health equity a priority,” said Luis Perez, president and CEO of Mental Health Connecticut.

We are also seeing an alarming number of children reporting suicidal thoughts and self-harm. We already knew that not enough was being done to support people living with mental illness, but the state of mental health in America confirms the trend that mental health in the United States continues to deteriorate. Many countries are ill-equipped to deal with this crisis, and politicians at all levels of government need to act immediately.

At the same time, cities are likely to have more professionals than average and may even see worker saturation.

Different occupations are predicted to be more vulnerable to shortages in the future. The Institute on Drug Abuse and Mental Health estimates that by 2025, the United States will have a shortage of:

This shortage can be attributed to both decreasing supply and increasing demand. In general, professionals are aging out of these fields faster than they are being replaced by younger professionals. However, population growth and increasing insurance coverage suggest that greater numbers of people will seek mental health treatment in the future.
