Doctors Emphasize Potential Risks As New Weight Loss Drugs Grow In Popularity
Mounjaro has not been studied in patients with a history of pancreatitis and is not indicated for use in patients with type 1 diabetes.
Many of the participants in the Mounjaro trials were also overweight or obese; mean BMI was 32 to 34 at trial enrollment. A BMI of 30 or more is classified as obese, according to the CDC.
Although the drug is not indicated for weight loss, the mean change in body weight was the secondary endpoint in all SURPASS studies, and participants lost between 12 and 25 pounds on average.
Eli Lilly is seeking approval of tirzepatide for weight loss, and the company recently announced results from a phase 3 trial. Participants (all who were overweight or obese, but not diagnosed with type 2 diabetes) received the drug or placebo over a 72-week period, with support for following a calorie-restricted diet and increasing levels of physical activity. Side effects reported in 5 percent or more of people taking Mounjaro included nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, constipation, upper abdominal discomfort, and abdominal pain.
The drug has a warning about the risk of C-cell tumors in the thyroid gland, as Mounjaro causes C-cell tumors in mice. It is not known whether Mounjaro causes such tumors, including medullary gland cancer, in humans. According to the instructions, Mounjaro should not be used in patients with a personal or family history of medullary gland cancer or in patients with multiple types of endocrine neoplasia.
Mounjaro will be available in six doses (2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, and 15 mg) and will come in an auto-injector pen with a pre-attached, hidden needle that patients don’t need. handle or see.
