In addition, both are associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, improved insulin sensitivity, or both. But it is also delicious, which makes it easier for you to adapt to your life and settle down.

Studies show that one serving of yogurt per day is associated with an 18% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

It is not clear how yogurt can help prevent type 2 diabetes, but the protection may come from probiotics or the history of special yogurt. Or it could be as simple as eating high-fat yogurt instead of low-fat snacks or breakfast foods like toaster pastries.

Yes, people with diabetes can (and should) eat fruit. A diet rich in fruit is associated with fewer, not more, diseases. Citrus fruits, for example, contain a type of fiber that lowers blood sugar. And fruit, in particular, is associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

There is a whole world of whole grains out there! Try something new this week, like quinoa, millet, farro, or amaranth. And find more ways to eat oats and barley. These two grains provide us with the viscous fiber beta-glucan, which increases insulin sensitivity. And it lowers cholesterol too! For an easy change, try mixing white rice with brown rice or make your next pasta with barley instead of macaroni.

The Prediabetes Diet Everyone Should Follow

Plant-based diets are very controversial, and for good reason. They are associated with low body weight and chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and many types of cancer. But you can benefit from plant-based foods without going vegetarian or vegan. I advocate a “plant slant” diet that includes plenty of plant protein as well as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts.

Foods such as lentils, split peas, kidney beans and black beans are rich sources of nutrients, including protein, folate, fiber, resistant starch, vitamins, minerals and disease-fighting phytonutrients. Research shows that a diet rich in legumes has a positive effect on blood sugar levels in the short and long term. So try to eat several times a week. You don’t have to give up your favorite animal foods. Just reduce the meat and add some vegetables and beans.

Nuts, in particular, are associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. And better health outcomes among people with type 2 diabetes. Nuts contain many phytonutrients that promote health, so you should feel good about adding them to your salad. vegetables and even eat a 1/4-cup serving of a snack. It’s all good so enjoy it all.

In addition, certain foods high in healthy unsaturated fats are associated with improved insulin sensitivity when substituted for saturated fats. Limit saturated fat (including coconut oil) and embrace unsaturated fats in foods like nuts, canola and olive oils, as well as oily fish, olives and avocados. But they all have something to offer, such as anti-inflammatory or anti-microbial properties. Enjoy fresh, dried or mixed. All of these are good choices for your prediabetes diet.

Isn’t it nice to know that your favorite drinks are good for you? All of these drinks are associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. They come from plants, so it’s no surprise that they contain important phytonutrients. Even decaffeinated versions offer protection. Just be careful to keep them healthy and low in calories. Skip the cream (or use just a touch), syrups and spoonfuls of sugar.

My usual breakfast is low-fat cottage cheese with cinnamon and muesli. Muesli contains beta glucan, plus, since the oats in muesli are uncooked, they contain resistant starch. You are not alone. It’s hard to change your habits at the grocery store! Try this: Write down at least five foods that you have eaten recently or eat regularly. Then for each meal, try to make some of the changes and adjustments we discussed earlier in this article.

For example, if you make pasta once a week, try replacing white pasta with whole-grain pasta or other whole grains like farro. Or if you eat burgers every week, try black beans next week. You don’t need to be perfect – just find a few foods that you can make small changes to, then put together your prediabetes shopping list.
