Protein Shakes For Weight Loss – As an active person, athlete, or someone trying to lose weight, we’re always looking for the best protein shakes in the store. The grocery store can be confusing when choosing the best protein shake to buy. Sports drinks that you buy in a bottle are called Ready To Drink or RTD Protein Shake. Sometimes you may notice that the packaging says Diet Shake or Meal Replacement Shake instead of Protein Shake. There is a difference between the two. Protein shakes can be a great way to help you lose weight and gain muscle, as well as a good snack on the go. But what is the difference between a protein shake and a nutritional shake or meal replacement?

Protein shakes are drinks that contain protein as the main ingredient. These can be whey proteins or plant proteins such as hemp, pea, rice, soy or a combination of grains. They tend to be low in other macronutrients, usually low in fat and carbohydrates. Some plant-based protein shakes will have a higher carbohydrate content than whey protein shakes due to the fiber content of the plants that make up the protein source. You can prepare a protein shake at home with a powder or buy a ready-made one, which is called a ready-to-drink or RTD protein shake. They are good for both weight loss and weight gain, but usually require more calories to gain weight.

A nutrition shake or meal replacement is a drink that contains protein, but also has other macronutrients, such as carbohydrates and fats, and micronutrients, which are your vitamins and minerals. It is a meal replacement in a shake. This may not be the perfect meal for many people, especially athletes or those looking to increase their performance. During a weight loss program, a nutritional drink is often used as a meal replacement that will still provide the nutrients needed for that meal. The situation is not ideal, but it can work. Many MLMs or crash diets promote diet shakes or meal replacements because you have to buy the shakes from the company and they make money off of them. If you are trying to lose weight or plan to lose weight, I suggest making your own meal replacement shakes at home with your protein powder, fruits, vegetables, and antioxidants so you have a whole food nutritional shake instead of synthetic vitamins and minerals. The quality of vitamins and minerals is important, the cheaper versions of the nutrients used in nutritional drinks to enrich them are not always absorbed by our bodies. Then you’re just wasting your money and possibly deficient in nutrients while reaching your weight loss goals.

In the United States, the term “meal replacement” is not defined in the regulations of the Federal Food and Drug Administration. In Europe, meal replacements that supplement or replace completely normal meals are regulated with regard to their energy content.

Although the US does not regulate this market, which allows all MLM (multi-level marketing) companies to rip people off by selling low-calorie meal replacements, they often follow these guidelines. I do not recommend using these for weight loss.

I suggest using nutrition shakes as a way to get nutrients in when a meal isn’t available or you’re in between workouts so you can quickly absorb the nutrients and get back to the game. They are a supplement, which means they complement and do not replace food. They can come in handy for athletes who need a meal on the go or a replacement between meals. However, they should not be used by the general population as a meal replacement to reduce calories. Drinking a shake won’t make you feel full.
