Welcome to Raw Food Friday where I’ll be sharing recipes of what I feed my dogs. Every week, I receive an email from someone who wants me to give them a balanced raw food recipe. I’ve tried to do this many times in the past and found that I don’t really have the experience; Especially back when all my raw meals were made with a base mix. Today, I cook raw meals on the fly every day and my dogs are thriving and I’m excited to share those meals with others who need inspiration.

The recipe below is made in bulk. The amount of emu, quail and organ mixture varies depending on the number of times the dogs are fed and the number of days the mixture will be fed.

The emu I order is 100% meat so when I feed it to my dogs, I need to add bones, offal and liver. Emu is lean, so when I combine it with duck, which has more fat, I don’t worry about the meal being too fatty. And Rodrigo does well on emu, allowing me to add another red meat to my dogs’ diet.

Instead of adding duck, which I usually feed, I mixed emu with ground quail. Rodrigo does not do well on chicken, turkey, pheasant, or guinea fowl; But he can eat duck and quail, so, I alternate between the two when I feed my dogs.

I added duck necks for crunch. The dogs love them and although I increased the bone content of this meal by adding duck neck, I did this because the teeth cleaning benefits were important, dogs love the crunch, and I could adjust the meal by feeding less bones during the week. And more muscle meat and organs.

I’m having trouble finding a good variety of offal (offal) so I add an organ mix from GreenTripe.com. The organ mix is ”a fresh frozen mix of beef heart, lung, liver, spleen and pancreas with green tripe.”

Nutritious Raw Diet Dog Food & Treats

I consider raw eggs a multivitamin because there are so many nutrients. I don’t feed shells unless I have a bone source. Instead, I put eggshells in my garden as compost.

I add fermented vegetables to my dogs’ raw meals because they are a source of nutrients, cancer-fighting antioxidants, fiber, and probiotics for gut health. I usually mix meat together in my dogs’ meals; However, if I add vegetables per meal, I add 1 tablespoon per dish.

I believe that we should supplement our dogs’ meals based on their individual needs so that my two dogs don’t get the same set of supplements. However, I believe all my dogs need the following:

Supplements can be purchased or they can be provided through whole food sources. For example, I can buy joint supplements or support my dog’s joints by adding more duck feet, beef trachea and other foods high in glucosamine. I tend to add both. Okay, so I know I’m preaching pre-made raw dog food for the easiest way to feed my dogs their ancestral diet. Butt, I changed jobs and started paying for my pre-made ones. Suddenly it became very tempting to find different options at different price points. How I DIY my dogs raw food is the lazy way.

Here we go! DIY raw dog food for the lazy raw feeders of the world. I feed the B.A.R.F. Diet so that Darwin’s Pet Products by Steve Brown is 75% meat, bone and organ with 25% vegetables and/or fruit from meal formulator James Pendergast. There are other raw diets that I hope to cover later but let’s start with what I know. I based my meat, bone, and organ ratio on Perfectly Rossum’s recommended amount of vegetables, so I added more vegetables than she did.

Ground meat, stew meat, tongue, uterus, green tripe and bone-in meat. More on them in my bones section. There are other meats that apply to this section but I haven’t been able to find them easily at grocery stores.

Liver, kidney and brain. Liver is a special organ because dogs need liver because of its high nutritional value. But not much because of the overly nutritious liver. Dogs Naturally recommends 3.5 ounces per week for small dogs and 7 ounces per week for medium to large dogs. It is also an ingredient that I make sure is of high quality because everything that has gone into that animal has been filtered through the liver. Other organs can be mixed and matched.

I use raw meaty bones (RMBs) because they are easy to find. It includes ribs, chicken legs, wings and back. As with muscle meat, there are many more options but not readily available at your local grocery store. Now there are times when I feel like I’m missing the bones when I add eggshells.

At first, I tried making my own veggie mix from a recipe from Keep the Tail Wagging. It’s a great blend, but not only did I blow up my kitchen blender, it took forever. I mean an hour or so, and that’s too much work for my lazy self. I found a new blender that works like a charm but still wanted to find an easier way. Then it hit me. Pre-mix! I’ve been in the pre-made world for so long that I forgot that there are so many great people who make dehydrated veggie/nutrition mixes that I can easily buy, rehydrate, and add meat to. I’m using Honest Kitchen right now but will expand to others for my raw reviews later.

I add a little canned sardine to each meal during prep or once a week as a treat/emergency meal. Make sure the sardines are packed in just water or oil and you’re good to go.

Make sure you have the right tools/supplies and are ready to get the job done. I gave this tip in my interview with The Dead Dog Official and then immediately went ahead and started my first DIY adventure on the fly. This resulted in a 2-hour prep time and a broken blender (mentioned above). These are things I should have done right off the bat.
