In 2001, she reached her maximum weight of 345 pounds. She then had gastric bypass surgery, lost 175 pounds and kept it off until 2010. But the traumatic experience led to a serious setback in her life. When she was pulling out of a parking lot one day, she stopped to close the sunroof in the back of her car and was almost kidnapped and run over. She suspects she may have been targeted because of her hearing loss.

“I had one foot in the car and one foot out and he slammed the door, trapping me inside. He said, “Go over.” I’m taking you, your wallet and your car,” she said. Rose was taught not to go anywhere with her attacker because she would most likely be killed. So she put it in reverse and drove off.

“He went down and I kept going. I didn’t even know where I was, I was so shocked. I didn’t know if I killed him,” she said. “After that I was afraid to leave the house. I wouldn’t go anywhere. That’s when I started gaining weight. I was so depressed and I beat my insecurities and fears with food.”

Five years later, her weight had ballooned to 298. She tried using MyFitnessPal, but kept losing and gaining the same 25 pounds. “I wasn’t really ready to do anything,” she said.

After taking care of some health issues, Rose started to lose weight. In 2017, she realized her hearing was deteriorating—the hearing aids she’d relied on for years barely worked, and she was lip-reading to communicate. In 2018, she received cochlear implants, which are surgically implanted devices that can help you hear. “It gave me confidence,” she said.

Later, she went to the doctor because she was experiencing severe pain from arthritis in her knees. She needed a knee replacement and needed to lose weight. “He told me, ‘The quality of your life depends on how much weight you lose,'” she said. She took this advice to heart and started making changes.

“I’m a slow loser,” she said. “I’m a firm believer that the way you lose weight is something you have to do for the rest of your life or you’ll just gain it back. It should be a lifestyle,” she said. She sets small, short-term goals for herself. “I try to lose 10 pounds at a time, and it usually takes me two to three months to lose those 10 pounds. I have that mindset and then I try to drop another 10.”

She calls the day she hit “Onederland” — a weight loss that starts with a “one” on the scale — a big moment. She can still remember when it was: August 24, 2021. She’s now down to 186 pounds, and her short-term goal is to get into the 170s. In the long term, she would like to weigh between 155 and 160.

Weight Loss Mistakes

“I’ve tried all the diets and they don’t work for me,” she said. “So I try to follow the 80/20 rule. I eat healthy 80% of the time and whatever I want 20% of the time. I can have it all—I just can’t have it all at once. It works for me. I don’t feel deprived and it’s just a way of life now.”

The foods she includes in the 20% are pasta and potato chips. “I don’t keep potato chips in my house because that’s my food. When I want chips, I go to the store, buy a small bag, bring them home and taste them. I don’t feel guilty,” she said.

In January 2020, she decided to try intermittent fasting. In the morning, she drinks black coffee and eats a salad with protein around 11 a.m., depending on when she gets hungry. She usually cooks something in the deep fryer for dinner and stops eating by 7pm.

“I have to eat two meals a day or I don’t get my nutrition, and I try to have between 1,200 and 1,500 calories a day,” she said. She watches her macros, but doesn’t stress about them. She just uses them to guide her towards healthier choices. Since she had gastric bypass surgery, she doesn’t have to worry about portion control. “I can only eat a small amount or I’ll get sick,” she said.

In June 2021, Rose had her first knee replacement, and as part of her preparation, her doctor gave her a series of exercises. “I started doing it and after I had my first knee surgery, I got a lot stronger. I added some yoga. It was difficult to walk because of the other knee,” she said. “I used to walk all the time when I was younger, and I loved it, but it’s hard to walk when you’re bent over a walker or on a scooter.”

She had her second knee replaced about a year after her first, and now takes between 6,000 and 9,000 steps a day. When it’s too hot to go out in her neighborhood of Vancouver, Washington, she and her husband walk to the mall so she can go inside. She also challenged herself to lie down on the floor and get back up twice a day for 30 days. She does squats, strength training with straps and rides a recumbent trike.
