Experts note that learning how to lose weight and keep it off is critical when it comes to preventing diabetes.Thinkstock

Your doctor probably preaches healthy eating habits and exercise to manage type 2 diabetes, and while both of these things help keep your blood sugar under control, they can also help you lose weight. And losing weight may be the key to reversing type 2 diabetes, according to an analysis published in September 2017 in the journal BMJ.

The authors noted that losing 33 pounds (lbs) often helps put diabetes back into remission. Yes, that sounds pretty specific, but it makes more sense when you consider that the data is based on a 15-kilogram loss, which equates to 33 lbs. That’s a bold statement, given that many people think of type 2 diabetes as a chronic, lifelong condition.

Can You Reverse Type 2 Diabetes And Prediabetes?

The specific figure is taken from previous research: A study published in May 2016 in the journal Diabetes Care found that 40 percent of people who lost about 33 pounds and kept it off for six months on a low-calorie diet could develop diabetes. into remission.

In that study, the authors concluded that type 2 diabetes is a “potentially reversible condition.” However, this does not mean that you should aim to lose 33 lbs in particular. “Further work on this is ongoing, regarding the actual weight loss required,” says study co-author Louise McCombie, RD, a research associate at the University of Glasgow in Scotland.

Indeed, this is part of a larger body of research that will be presented at the International Diabetes Federation in December 2017. And while 40 percent of people sending diabetics into remission is an impressive number, it also suggests that it is possible for some people, but not all.

It is well known that losing weight if you have prediabetes can prevent the condition from developing into full-blown diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), losing a modest 5 to 7 percent of body weight is the magic range. That would be 10 to 14 pounds if you are a 200 pound person.

How To Gain Weight With Diabetes: 5 Proven Techniques To Reverse

So why does weight loss make such a difference? “A key mechanism for reversing type 2 diabetes has to do with the loss of fat from the pancreas and liver,” McCombie says. She cites a study published in October 2011 in the journal Diabetologia that found that losing weight by reducing calorie intake for eight weeks improved the function of beta cells, which are found in the pancreas and whose function is to store and release insulin. The researchers said that insulin resistance and problems with insulin secretion come down to excess fat in the pancreas and liver.

One problem? Many people with type 2 diabetes are unaware of the importance of losing weight, which can have a big impact on your future health. “The consequences are severe, especially because people develop the disease at a much younger age, and [problems] have time to manifest,” McCombie says. Rather than relying solely on medication to manage blood sugar, losing weight has the added benefit of addressing the underlying cause of the disease, she notes.

So here’s the trick: Losing weight can be easy at first – but what’s hard is keeping it off. “Maintaining weight loss is vital, and you need to have the right strategies in place,” McCombie says.

That’s the key. Otherwise, you risk reverting to old habits. If that happens, your numbers can slip back into the diabetic range, says Martha McKittrick, RD, CDE, based in New York City. “When people are first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, they become very strict and start exercising and controlling their diet. They may even see their blood sugar levels drop to normal levels. They lose weight, they are happy and relieved. But after a few months, the motivation disappears; “Most people go back to their old habits, and the diabetes comes right back,” she says.

Foods To Eat To Help You Lose Weight

There is also something called a weight set point, where weight loss becomes more challenging as you shed pounds due to a loss of metabolism.

McKittrick agrees that a lot of people don’t realize how important weight loss is when you have type 2 diabetes. you kind of ‘save’ your pancreas from being overwhelmed and they end up not being able to produce enough insulin – maybe they’re more willing to make permanent changes,” she says.

1. What is your motivation? Make sure it’s positive. Phrases like “I can extend my life,” “I’m enjoying a better life as I age,” and “I’m taking less medication” will show you the bigger picture to keep you on track, McKittrick says.

2. Change habits gradually. It’s a lot to ask of yourself to start going to the gym six days a week if you don’t exercise now. A better option might be to build activity into your day first, says McKittrick. “Exercise is such an important component to preventing type 2 diabetes or getting it into remission. It encourages muscle cells to use sugar for energy, which helps lower blood glucose,” she explains. If you haven’t developed a full exercise regimen, make walking part of your commute, commit to taking your dog for two short walks a day, or go out at lunchtime for a walk.

3. Think about your diet. A diet plan that works for one person may not for another. For example, you might thrive on a very low-carb diet, while someone else needs some healthy carbs, like quinoa, during meals to feel satisfied, McKittrick points out. “Working with a registered dietitian who specializes in diabetes can help you fine-tune your diet,” she says.

4. Know that your diabetes medications can affect your weight. For example, while Glucophage (metformin) can cause weight loss in some individuals, insulin can cause excess weight to pile on. If you’re having trouble losing weight, consider talking to your doctor about how diabetes medications may affect your waistline.

5. Talk to your doctor about weight loss surgery options. If you meet certain criteria, you may be a good candidate for bariatric surgery, which studies show can help with better glycemic control. For example, an article published in February 2017 in the New England Journal of Medicine from the Randomized Controlled Trial of Surgery and Drugs Potentially Effective in Eradicating Diabetes (STAMPEDE) found that bariatric surgery may be more effective than diabetes drugs alone in helping people with type 2 diabetes achieves blood sugar control.

6. Follow yourself. The key is to keep your blood sugar under control. Tracking can give you important feedback on how your actions are affecting your levels, McKittrick says.
